PRACTISE TOGETHER

Photography club activities for any phone or camera

Give a small group one clear constraint, a little time to make photographs and a question worth discussing. These six activities work in ordinary surroundings. No Beat AI account is needed for local practice.

Keep the setup simple

Agree on a permitted area and a finish time. Bring a phone or camera, something to write with and an everyday subject. For a mixed group, explain the photographic choice before discussing camera controls. Offer a seated tabletop version and make sharing optional.

Local practice does not require public uploads. If someone chooses to share a photograph, check that they have permission to share the subject and that the frame does not expose private information.

ACTIVITY 01 · 10 MINUTES

One subject, three positions

Choose an ordinary subject. Make an eye-level view, a closer detail and a view from another safe position. Keep the subject the same so you can explain what changing position does.

Discuss: Which version makes the subject easiest to notice? What did the other frames reveal?

ACTIVITY 02 · 10 MINUTES

Find a quieter background

Start with a scene containing a distracting edge or bright patch. Move a little sideways, then try a closer view. Compare all three frames at the same size rather than deleting the first one immediately.

Discuss: Did the simpler frame help the idea, or did removing the surroundings also remove useful context?

ACTIVITY 03 · 15 MINUTES

Compare window light

Use a cup, fruit or folded cloth near a window. Compare light from behind the photographer, from the side and from behind the subject. Keep the object and editing approach similar. Avoid casting your own shadow across it.

Discuss: Which direction shows the shape, texture or mood you wanted? There is no single direction that wins for every subject.

ACTIVITY 04 · 10 MINUTES

Follow one colour

Choose a colour and find three different ways it appears in the room or an agreed walking area. Try a small detail, a wider scene and a frame with more empty space. A seated tabletop version works too.

Discuss: Does the colour carry the picture, or does another part of the frame compete with it?

ACTIVITY 05 · 15 MINUTES

Tell a three-frame story

Photograph a setting, a detail and a sign of change. An empty desk becoming ready for work or a still-life arrangement is enough. Plan the order before sharing; no faces or private information are needed.

Discuss: Can someone understand the sequence without a long explanation? Which frame provides the missing context?

ACTIVITY 06 · 10 MINUTES

Choose from six frames

Make six versions while changing one choice at a time. Write a sentence about your intention, compare the previews, then open the two finalists fully to check focus and edges. Pick one and explain the decision.

Discuss: What did the full-size view show that the small preview hid?

A ready-to-run 30-minute session

Use “one subject, three positions” as the starting exercise. The free three-page kit contains a facilitator plan, participant worksheet and discussion prompts.

  1. 0–3 minutes: Choose an intention. Pick calm, contrast or curiosity. Say what you want a viewer to notice.
  2. 3–6 minutes: Look before photographing. Find one subject and notice its light, edges and background.
  3. 6–16 minutes: Make three deliberate versions. Change your position or framing, then keep all three for comparison.
  4. 16–24 minutes: Discuss in pairs. Give each person four minutes. Describe one visible choice and ask one useful question.
  5. 24–28 minutes: Choose a next step. Write one decision you would keep and one thing you would try differently.
  6. 28–30 minutes: Continue if you want. Pick a prompt for your next local exercise or read the live Beat AI challenge guide.

Optional audio cues, with written alternatives

The free audio pack includes a 30-minute track with quiet time for the activities, eight separate cues, the printable kit and a complete written transcript. Download and unzip it, then open “Start here - club session audio.html”. The narration uses a generic synthetic voice; no participant recordings are included.

You can use the printed plan alone. The audio is a timing aid, not a requirement to follow the exercise or join Beat AI.

Give feedback that helps the next photograph

Describe what you can see before suggesting a change. “The bright patch at the edge catches my eye” is more useful than a score without an explanation. Ask what the photographer intended, then offer one small thing to compare in another frame. Avoid declaring a universal winner when the photographs serve different ideas.

Use the free video lessons as a group introduction. Each lesson has pause controls and a written practice task; the framing quiz uses a landscape layout on desktop.

Try a dated photography brief

Beat AI is a daily photography challenge in beta. Original photographs face AI artwork in blind community votes. Your group exercise stays separate unless you choose to make and submit an eligible entry.
